Sweet Summertime

Lauren Nolan

There’s something magical about summer pond season. Whether it’s the hum of a well-running pump, the flicker of landscape lights on a warm night, or the quiet joy of watching koi glide through still water, this is the time when all your hard work comes to life. You’re the creators of these moments—the ones who bring peace, beauty and balance to backyards across the country. I hope in between jobs, cleanouts, and project builds, you’re also able to enjoy a few of those tranquil summer evenings yourselves.

The July /August 2025 issue of POND Trade is a celebration of the season’s energy and the people who shape it. Larry Carnes kicks us off with a deep dive into the power of micro and nanobubble technology, while George Mihalchick lights the way with creative ideas for illuminating ponds and landscapes after dark.

Designing with koi in mind? Cooper Sallade brings us inside the creation of a 100,000-gallon formal koi pond. For solo contractors, Sean Cudmore shares how the WaterVac has become a game-changer in his cleanout process. As koi shows gain momentum, Taro Kodama offers a clear, confident guide to navigating the world of competitive Nishikigoi and Kent Wallace brings us behind the scenes of this year’s All-American Koi Show in Las Vegas.

Pollinators take center stage in Emily Lane’s piece on how a thoughtfully planted pondscape can invite these special guests into your water garden. Then, Mike Gannon offers a sweeping historical perspective on water feature design.

Finally, if you’ve ever had that creeping feeling that you’re not “really” a business owner, Steve Rozenberg’s article on imposter syndrome will hit home. Finally, we celebrate the 2024 Water Artisans of the Year as they proudly show off their trophies and share what the recognition means to them. It’s also your friendly reminder: this year’s submission deadline is November 30.

Here’s to calm waters, warm nights, and the beautiful spaces you continue to create.

Until the next splash!
