Savio Engineering Part of New Home for Stingrays at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago

Published on August 1, 2013

The completion of Shedd Aquarium’s Stingray Touch experience marks a momentous occasion for Savio Engineering, a New York based water feature manufacturer. To date, this is the largest scale project that Savio products have been used for, and the project itself was a much anticipated addition to the most visited aquarium in the United States.

The new exhibit, which opened at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois earlier this spring, offers an interactive experience for visitors to observe and touch stingrays in an open water exhibit. Constructed atop an existing outdoor terrace, four Savio Skimmer/Filters were cast into the pool wall that is home to the stingrays. Savio’s Skimmer/Filters reflect the latest technology, and the latest Uvinex system is made of stainless steel and is the only UV skimmer that does not require a glass sleeve.

William Gamble, a principle with Nevin Hedlund Architects, Inc. worked in conjunction with Shedd’s design team over six months to complete the project. Based in River Forest, Illinois, Hedlund Architects was previously involved in Shedd Aquarium projects including the Jellies Special Exhibit, the renovation of the Amazon Rising Exhibit and the renovation of the Local Waters Exhibit.
